This session was enlightening for me, and I think I know why...
The longer I photograph families, the more I see the importance of being prepared.
Having multiple conversations with my clients before their session, viewing their home (often in person) ahead of time, sketching poses that I'll use with their family, and gathering inspiration (but not too much) from outside sources, are all steps that I've added to my Family Session prep-list.
That may sound like overkill, but I'm experiencing the difference both in myself and in my clients, when I'm prepared and I'm loving the outcome. I've noticed that I'm more relaxed at a session when I have a plan instead of feeling the need to make everything up on the spot. There's always room for inspiration and spur-of-the-moment ideas, but having a plan gives us a solid foundation to build on.
For this session, Jenny and I decided to bring the boys' train set outside, we would have a snack, read some books and finish with some fun water-play. It's reassuring for everyone to know (generally) what's coming next and gives structure to our time together.
Thank you Munro Family for being a blast to work with - let's do it again sometime!
